Seven minutes behind a screen is all that is needed to transform your average person into a larger-than-life businessman.

It is all part of Queenstown woman Kay Mortimer's new business venture, called Encore, which has come about after having owned a costume shop and singing at various events such as weddings and Queenstown Idol.

Her idea is for karaoke shows ''with a difference''.

This involves selecting those attending to dress up in outfits which can be put on over their clothes, being shown a couple of dance steps to shows including Y.M.C.A. and The Sound of Music, and Ms Mortimer doing the singing.

Having recently returned from a Southern tour including Bluff, the Catlins, Gore and Invercargill, she said Christmas parties were on the agenda.

''It's just doing something a wee bit out of their comfort zone.''
