Comic actor Pio Terei urged parents to make sure their children's "emotional tank" was full, in his closing speech at the annual Blue Light conference on Saturday.

Mr Terei had delegates at the Coronet Peak Hotel chuckling as he delivered his presentation called "No Sweat Parenting", with anecdotes from his own experiences as a father and pre-recorded video sketches.

The patron of Parents Inc encouraged mothers and fathers to ensure their children slept and ate well and were living in a positive and fun atmosphere in the home.

Mr Terei's presentation was one of the lighter moments during the national conference which had been overshadowed by the death of Senior Constable Len Snee and the armed siege in Napier.

Blue Light national manager Brendon Crompton said speakers had referred to the events several times.

Police Commissioner Howard Broad officially opened the 26th annual conference on Thursday, where a minute's silence was observed, then departed Queenstown as the crisis developed.

Central Lakes Blue Light was officially registered as the non-profit, youth-oriented and police associated charity's 64th national branch.

Cromwell constable and Central Otago youth aid officer Jacqui Lambeth was appointed branch chairwoman.

Blue Light's participation in the Government's plan to put youth offenders through self-determining military programmes and risk management on youth adventure trips were also discussed.

About 150 delegates discussed the best practices in delivering youth programmes.
