Longer adventure films in line-up

The Queenstown Adventure Film Festival explores what makes daredevils risk life and limb and documents adventures in far-flung corners of the globe in longer movies this year.

The fourth annual showpiece of short international action sports, travel, environmental and adventure films returns to the Queenstown Memorial Hall begining on July 30.

Festival co-director Kirsten Nicholl said one night's line-up looked into the mind of the extreme sports athlete and the second focused on global adventures from remote spots in the world in several longer films.

There were several longer films that told more of a story, "so we thought we'd add the extra sessions to show some of them," she said. They would not fit so well in the short-movie format.

"While the longer programmes are more specifically focused, the appeal is expected to be just as wide as the short films line-up.

"We're anticipating people will go to the main short programme screening and then take in one or both of the longer film sessions."

Ms Nicholl said the festival was gaining momentum on the international adventure movie circuit. Film-makers were approaching her and co-director David Ovendale to submit their movies for the first time and new movies were arriving daily.

The Queenstown duo have finalised 85% of the programme, which will consist of 12 to 15 movies ranging in duration from three to 60 minutes.

The festival opens on Thursday, July 30, at 8pm in the memorial hall. Friday, July 31, Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2 will each feature an 8pm screening, with doors open at 7.15pm.

Saturday and Sunday will also include a matinee screening at 3pm, all showing the short films programme, for which doors open at 2.30pm.

The longer programmes screen on Monday, August 3 and Tuesday August 4, both at 8pm, with doors open at 7.15pm. Tickets will be on sale from tomorrow and available from Ticket Direct, Queenstown i-Site Visitors Centre, the Queenstown Events Centre and the door, subject to availability.

An adult single session ticket will cost $24, as in the past, and a range of discounted packages will be introduced for the first time to encourage return patronage.

About 1100 people enjoyed last year's festival.
