Some motorists, described as "absolute lunatics", may get infringement notices after trying to bypass police roadblocks in Queenstown yesterday morning.

Police were called to assist with traffic management after a gas leak at The Junction building, on the corner of Robins Rd and Gorge Rd about 10.30am.

Police vehicles were set up on Gorge Rd at the start of a turning bay on to Robins Rd, at the intersection of the two roads and at the intersection of Robins Rd and Isle St.

However, Sergeant Mark Gill was kept busy with several drivers trying to drive around the "Police Operation" sign set up beside the police vehicle, and one taxi driver, transporting a young child, trying to drive over it.

"We're dealing with a gas leak," Sgt Gill said.

"It's frustrating - it's for the people who are trying to deal with the emergency, driving through the signs - through police signs - is lunacy.

"We don't take closing roads [lightly] ... to disobey those signs is an offence which can be prosecuted."
