Man accused of attack on officer named

A Frankton man who allegedly bashed a Queenstown police sergeant over the head with a metal tool has been named.

Matthew Ben Goulouh (33), company director, was remanded in custody by consent when he appeared before a Justice of the Peace in the Queenstown District Court this morning.

He will make a bail application in the Invercargill District Court on Friday by audio-visual link from Invercargill Prison.

Sergeant Keith Newell sustained a 3cm gash to his head after police responded to reports a man had assaulted his flatmate at a Frankton property about 4.30am yesterday.

Goulouh is charged with injuring Raymond Daniel Morgan with intent to injure, wounding Sgt Newell with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, assaulting Constable Claire Frooms with intent to obstruct her and resisting Sergeant Blair Duffy.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka told the Otago Daily Times that Newell was recovering well.

''The gash was glued, he didn't need stitches or suffer a concussion, and insisted on coming back into work yesterday.''

Newell believed his thick police-issue beanie had offered him some protection from the tool, which was understood to be a wrench, she said.
