Mayor spent almost $16,500

The new Mayor of the Queenstown Lakes District,  spent $16,419 on her election campaign, figures released by the council last night show.

The figures also showed she received $6500 in donations.

Fellow mayoral hopefuls Simon Hayes and Michael Scott both spent just over $2000 - the cost of Mr Hayes campaign totalled $2353, with no donations, with Mr Scott spending $2219.31 and receiving $250 in donations.

In an interview with the Otago Daily Times in September, Ms van Uden said her campaign funding budget was $20,000 "as defined in the election guidelines" and there were "a number of people" helping her fund it.

Unsuccessful Wakatipu ward council candidate Geoffrey Wilson spent the most on his campaign, totalling $3665.55, with fellow candidate Preston Stevens spending just $286.66, but receiving $1402.78 in donations.

Annette Dalziel, of Kingston, who was also unsuccessful, spent just $36 on her campaign, while John Mann and Mel Gazzard spent nothing.

Of the successful candidates, Simon Stamers-Smith spent the most in the Wakatipu, with an electoral expense of $1272.68; Cath Gilmour spent $931.50; Russell Mawhinney spent $819.03 with another $500 in donations; and Trevor Tattersfield spent $730.04.

In the Wanaka ward, Carrick Jones and Joanne Dippie - both unsuccessful - spent the most on their campaigns, with returns of $1771.25 and $1739.14 respectively.

Of those successful in their bids, Jude Battson spent the most - $1052.27 - with Leigh Overton spending $817.90 and deputy mayor Lyal Cocks spending $366.43.

Successful Arrowtown ward candidate Lex Perkins spent $489.01, while his fellow candidate Simon Spark spent nothing.
