Negotiations continuing

Negotiantions are continuing over a piece of land sought for conservation purposes on the banks of the Clutha River near Luggate.

The Red Bridge River Park Trust had until Monday this week to raise $300,000 to buy the 0.4ha piece of land from Contact Energy Ltd.

The trust wants to establish a community ''river park'' on the site.

However, Contact's trading, development and geothermal resources project manager, Neil Gillespie, said this week the power company was ''having some further discussions'' with trust spokesman Lewis Verduyn-Cassels.

Last week, the trust made an offer on the land which Mr Verduyn-Cassels said fell short of the $300,000 Contact wanted.

He pointed out the company recently sold 164ha of nearby land to the Department of Conservation for about $5700 per ha. Mr Gillespie also declined to comment on the trust's offer.
