The Department of Conservation has finished work on the 10-bunk hut, which is scheduled to open to the public next week.
Liverpool hut is located on the eastern side of Mt Barth, a five to seven-hour tramp from the Raspberry Creek car park and three to four hours from Aspiring hut.
About 600 visitors a year used the old six-bunk hut and these figures were expected to increase with the introduction of the larger facility, Doc project manager Jeremy Murray-Orr said.
Work on the new hut started about two months ago, when the old one was lifted from its foundations by a helicopter.
Workers used the old hut for accommodation during the construction project, with all building materials flown to the site by helicopter, builder John Henderson said.
The new hut is a 40sq m, 10-bunk alpine-style building similar to the Brewster hut, near Makarora, opened in 2007.
The hut has mattresses, a water supply and a large veranda.
Two-tiered sleeping platforms were at one end of the building, while a common room with a cooking bench, seating and tables was at the other end, Mr Murray-Orr said.
