Otago wins tournament as former cricket stars compete

Otago won the Mercure Masters twenty/20 cricket tournament for the first time yesterday, beating Central Districts in a close finish in Queenstown.

Central Districts batted first for 167, with Mark Douglas the top scorer making 52 runs.

But Otago then passed the Central total for the loss of only two wickets.

Otago's Andrew Hore was man of the match with 101 not out.

The match was the conclusion of a weekend-long tournament that saw about 60 former prominent cricketers reunite for 20-over games and socialising.

Players, wives and families from Otago, Central Districts, Wellington, Northern Districts and Auckland attended at the Queenstown Events Centre.

Organised and hosted by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association, with backing from New Zealand Cricket, the Mercure Masters extended an invitation to the Queenstown Cricket Club and gave young talents a chance to learn and mix with former first-class cricketers.

Former Black Caps, including all-rounder Shane Thompson, spin bowler Dipak Patel and medium-pacer Ewen Chatfield took part.
