Pair remanded until July

Two men accused of stealing deer, merino wethers, deer velvet, hoggets, hard antler and barley, valued in total at almost $30,000, between January 2005 and December last year will appear in the Invercargill District Court in July.

Dean Thomas Herd (36), farm manager, of Motueka, faces 24 charges relating to stock rustling and other thefts. Joint charges have been laid against Simon Robert Hawkins (28), of Wanaka.

All charges are laid indictably.

Herd admitted five charges of deer thefts, totalling $81,167.69, and one representative charge of stealing a trophy stag, worth $1200, when he appeared before Judge Michael Turner in the Queenstown District Court in January.

Both men have now been remanded to appear in Invercargill for a call-over on July 19, following a post-committal conference in Queenstown on Thursday.
