Park closure leaves vehicles stranded

The world's biggest school bus is about to become homeless after being a feature of the Cardrona Valley, near Wanaka, for about 10 years.

The big yellow bus belongs to South African Ian Soanes and his wife, Debbie, who have moved to Palmerston North.

Mr Soanes told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the lease on the property he used for his Cardrona Adventure Park would run out at the end of this month.

He had not decided what to do about the 20 quad bikes and other vehicles he used in his business, or where to move the bus.

''I don't have a clue. I don't have money to move it.''

Mr Soanes said he was ''gutted'' to lose the adventure park but he could not continue where he was and it was not viable for him to set up elsewhere.

''It's real gutting after all these years.''

While the business had been profitable initially, Mr Soanes said it was a victim of the economic downturn.

''We made good money in the first seven years. It is the last three years of recession that have killed us.''

And Mr Soanes said if he was to set up again elsewhere, it would cost up to $100,000 in local authority consents.

''I don't have the money.''

He was ''keeping the wolf from the door'' by using another of his big-wheeled vehicles, the monster truck that featured in the ''V'' drink commercial, for shows in the North Island.

But the bad luck seems to be following Mr Soanes around the North Island as well. He has copped $2000 in fines in a month transporting his wide-load monster truck between shows.

Mr Soanes did not expect he and his family would return to live in Wanaka.

''There's nothing there for us now. It's all gone.''
