Police warning over 'scam'

Wanaka police are urging the public to be wary of phone-scammers after a resident was targeted by someone falsely claiming to be from a home security company this week.

Senior Constable Mike Johnston said a person living in a "semi-rural environment" reported the phone call on Wednesday after becoming suspicious of the caller's intentions.

"[The caller] asked a lot of questions about the type of security they had at their place, which led the person on the other side to maybe divulge more information than they should have," Snr Const Johnston said.

Following the complaint, police checked with the security company the caller claimed to be from. It said the caller's marketing approach was not one used by the company.

While the incident was still a one-off, it was "enough to raise my concerns" and warranted warning the public that if they received a phone call from someone asking personal questions about home security, "they shouldn't entertain the conversation".

• Wanaka police apprehended a 28-year-old local male in Luggate early yesterday morning after he failed to stop for a random drink-driving check and then crashed his car.

Snr Const Johnston said the man was taken to the Wanaka Lakes Health Centre to be treated for intoxication by drugs or alcohol and for an injury he claimed to have sustained in the crash. He was subsequently transferred to Dunedin Hospital.
