The schoolchildren, who raised nearly $500, have inspired a community-wide effort.

Parent Susan Allison, also a teacher at Wanaka Preschool, has issued a challenge to all Upper Clutha schools and early childhood centres to follow suit with their own pyjama days this Thursday.

''I stole the idea off Hawea Flat School and have kind have just run with it, just to see how big we can get it,'' Mrs Allison said.

The challenge had also been extended to businesses in the district, following a suggestion from Hawea Flat School principal Sue Heath, who said she was sure lots of people with onesies in their wardrobes would love an opportunity to wear them to work.

A bank account has been set up and donations can be dropped off at any Upper Clutha early childhood centre.
