Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said this morning the man was the sole occupant of a vehicle which was pulling a trailer when the car crashed at 8.30pm.
Police, Frankton and Queenstown firefighters in an appliance from both stations and St John Queenstown ambulance officers attended the incident.
A serious crash unit arrived at the scene from Invercargill on the night.
Sgt Pirovano said the next of kin of the man are being informed. The matter was referred to the coroner.
