Almost 40 overseas students had their first taste hangi-cooked food at the Shotover Top 10 Holiday Park on Saturday evening.

The 29 German, three Italian, three Japanese, Malaysian, Brazilian and Czech Republic youngsters had the opportunity to sample traditionally cooked pork, beef, chicken, potatoes, pumpkin, kumara, stuffing and gravy at the Arthurs Point holiday park, as part of their 14-day tour of the South Island.

Wakatipu resident Ned Webster gave the group a mihi whakatau (informal welcome) to Tahuna (Queenstown) and acknowledged the surrounding Tapuni (Queenstown Hill), Kimiakau (Shotover River) and Kotara (Coronet Peak) before giving a karakia (blessing) for the food.

The feast was served after nine and a-half hours in the ground and the hangi was "the first of many" that will be hosted by holiday park co-owner and operator Kenneth Mitchell and Queenstown chef Daron Toeke, founder of Unique Hangis and Catering Services.
