Searchers sweep Lake Wanaka for missing man

Searchers are sweeping Lake Wanaka for a man in his 60s who disappeared while boating this evening.

The man, believed to be boating with the Wanaka Yacht Club, fell out of a boat in Roys Bay about 6.30pm.

The club holds a twilight race series each Thursday during summer, but it is understood officials cancelled today's racing because of choppy lake conditions.

However, some people ignored the cancellation and ventured out on the lake.

A Police Southern Communications spokesman said the man, who was in a boat with other people, was wearing a lifejacket but it was not inflated.

A helicopter joined about eight boats searching the lake around Eely Point, but there had been no sign of the man by 9.30pm when it got dark.

Further details are unavailable.
