Shade sought for playground

Family concerns about the lack of shade for children at the Lakes Hayes Estate playground have led two women to ask the Queenstown Lakes District Council for a grant towards a shade sail.

Samantha Kean and Celine Austin made a submission to the council's draft annual plan saying that most parents used the playground only early in the morning or late in the afternoon, due to the intensity of the sun.

Surrounding trees ''are still very small and do not provide enough [shade] to protect our children from the sun, especially on hot summer days''.

''The idea of a shade sail was put forward and the residents (supported by the Lake Hayes Community Association) would like to have the input of Queenstown Lakes District Council,'' their submission said.

They estimated a shade sail would cost a maximum of $10,000 but the community association did not have the money in its budget.

The women said now the bike park at the estate was open, the area had become more popular and birthday parties and barbecues were hosted there in summer.
