Sausage-maker Simon Tiefenbach's gourmet pork and fennel sausage has scooped top prize in the 2010 Great New Zealand Sausage competition, while three of his other Wanaka Mediterranean Market sausage creations have also claimed medals.
The pork and fennel creation out-grilled more than 400 other sausage contenders from around New Zealand to win the overall competition.
German-born Mr Tiefenbach (51) has more than 30 years' experience in the butchery and sausage-making industry.
He runs Wanaka smallgoods specialty company Deep Creek Delicatessen.
Wanaka Mediterranean Market owner Brendan Wilson is expecting an even bigger rush on the tasty smallgoods after Mr Tiefenbach's success.
"He's on holiday at the moment and I hope he's rested up, because we've sold out of the pork and fennel.
"He's certainly going to be a busy boy when he gets back," he said.
Word-of-mouth had ensured Mr Tiefenbach's supreme sausage had sold out quickly and the food store was now taking back-orders from its Wanaka customers, Mr Wilson said.
"It's even more reason for him to get back soon," he said
