Coronet Peak has been closed for five days of the 10 since it planned to open and the other Queenstown field, the Remarkables, could be the next casualty.
Coronet Peak was unable to open on its official opening day, June 7, due to heavy rain and high winds.
While it did manage to open the next day and stayed open last week, more rain and mild temperatures have meant the skifield has been closed since Friday and will remain closed until temperatures drop enough to allow staff to make snow.
The Remarkables skifield is due to open on Saturday, but the mild weather has all but melted the natural base of about 50cm, meaning the opening might have to be postponed, ski area manager Ross Lawrence said.
The mild weather experienced in Wakatipu in the past few days had "taken a bit of a toll", he said.
"We're back to square two. We're considering all our options at the moment - I can't say whether we'll be open or not.
"We really are just taking it one day at a time."
Mr Lawrence said there was now a base of between 10cm and 30cm across the mountain, but ideally there should be a 50cm base to open.
The average daily temperature of 12degC had meant it was too warm to make snow, so unless a change in the weather made its presence felt by Thursday, the chances of a Saturday opening were looking grim, he said.
"It is looking promising with the southerly . . . we'll make a call on Thursday afternoon. We want to leave it as long as possible.
"It's just that time of year. It's still the beginning of the season and the weather is changeable.
"Generally, we get this weather three weeks ago."
A MetService weather forecaster said the news was not good for the resort's skifields.
A "freshening southerly" on the way today would possibly bring a "flurry" of snow, but nothing significant was on the horizon.
Yesterday morning, Coronet recorded a temperature of 9degC - up from a an overnight low of 6degC.
Snow-making could only happen when temperatures were cold enough - generally considered to be -3degC.
The MetService forecaster said temperatures might drop tonight and tomorrow night, and snow-making might be possible.
However, it was not the end of the bad news, with a northerly change expected to reach the resort on Saturday.
"There's nothing on the horizon - they got off to a pretty good start, but it's not looking too good," the forecaster said.
"They might get [some natural snow] on Sunday."
