The awards were presented in Auckland at the weekend.
A. J. Saville Builder Ltd director Allister Saville, of Arrowtown, received the House of the Year award for building a home in the heart of the new Coronet Nine at Millbrook Golf Course.
It has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a living room with a clever hideaway office.
The home has solid masonry, a concrete mid-floor and "thermal heart" double-glazed windows, tiled bathrooms and engineered bench tops with "waterfall ends".
The judges noted the clever use of materials inside the home and rustic materials appropriate for the Central Otago environment and landscape outside.
Mr Saville said "it was great to be recognised".
Ajax Building Contractors Ltd owner Richard Hay received the renovation award for renovating a classic 1860 Lumsden farmhouse which had been altered many times over the years.
The homeowners decided to remove all existing alterations and rebuild in the same style as the original homestead, based on designs by Neil McDowell, of McDowell Architects.
Mr Hay said he had been entering the competition for the past 10 years, and was honoured to have won his first national award.
B. J. Carter Ltd owner James Carter, of Invercargill, received the Heart of the Home Kitchen Award for his company's work on a Queenstown holiday home.
He said the kitchen's beauty lay in its stylish simplicity and also its functionality, which remained completely hidden when not in use.
Mr Carter said it was the first time he had won a national award.
"I'm very proud."
The PlaceMakers Supreme Award for House of the Year went to Lindesay Construction Ltd, for a house in Remuera, Auckland, which also won the New Homes over $2 million award, and the Pink Batts Ultra Energy Efficiency Award.
The Remuera house, made with 15 kinds of chemical-free timber, was described by the judging panel as "faultless".
Pearson Group Ltd's century-old cottage in Kelburn, Wellington, was awarded the PlaceMakers Supreme Award for the Renovation of the Year and the Renovation under $250,000 category.
