The $550,000 upgrade of Church St and Searle Lane in Queenstown is expected to finish this week after starting four months ago and the Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is taking the opportunity to change the angle of parking bays on Marine Pde as "an extra".

Council project manager Lane Vermaas said yesterday major roadworks were finished in July, as scheduled, but poor weather delayed streetscaping by two weeks.

"It'll be finished this week, with the exception of little bits, like the uplighting to be installed and the seats finished."

Six extra light poles were installed and uplighting was to be added to the four cherry-tree planters. Steel cladding was added to the planters to give them a "rustic look", he said.

Finishing touches on the Camp St entrance to Searle Lane were also close to being signed off.

The full council is expected on Tuesday to ratify the building of a pergola structure at the entrance to Searle Lane to improve its amenity value and make it better for pedestrians.

Access was likely to be restricted to goods vehicles from 5am to until noon.

Mr Vermaas said works on Marine Pde were "an extra", as the upgrade had come in under budget. Improvements were to be completed in two weeks.

Kerbing on the Marine Pde junction with Church St was to be extended. Angled parking bays and the two traffic islands would be realigned.

The number of parking bays would not decrease on Marine Pde, but two bays had been removed to make way for the extended pedestrian walkway connecting Church St and Searle Lane.

"Comments have always been that [reverse entry angled parking] was not suitable," Mr Vermaas said.

"Now's a golden opportunity to get it done."
