Car lover Jock Freemantle is looking for people who like the "wow factor" in their cars to buy or invest in his brainchild, the Hulme supercar.

The road car with the Formula One flavour will be unveiled today at Queenstown's Earnslaw Park, allowing prospective investors and buyers to get a close look at the car Mr Freemantle plans to take to the world market.

Selling for a cool 295,000 euros (NZ$728,000), the pre-production show car has been painted in the trademark colours of Formula One racing car driver Denny Hulme, whose family is backing the project.

The car was aimed at the top-end "supercar" market.

Driving the Hulme supercar was the "closest thing to driving a Formula One single-seater on the roads", he said.

Mr Freemantle lived in Queenstown for 17 years during the 1970s and 1980s, but he now lives in Auckland.

He returned to the resort town yesterday afternoon for today's show on the waterfront.

The Hulme had the "three essentials" for a supercar - the wow factor, super handling and the Hulme name, he said.

The car was developed in New Zealand with design input from Massey University, and advice from car engineers all over the world.

Mr Freemantle said the car had been backed by a group of investors who were looking for others to support the project for production in 2010.

"We've got 75 investors to date, and we're looking for petrolheads to come to the party."

People could invest a minimum of $1000 in the project, he said.

While the car could be adapted for the New Zealand market, it had been designed for European standards which were used in China, Asia and the Middle East.

"We've got to sell 25 a year," Mr Freemantle said.

"We're looking for passionate multimillionaires who'll put their hand in their back pocket because they want to own a Hulme."
