The man known as the "father of modern-day Canadian ice climbing", Barry Blanchard, will wrap up his national speaking tour tonight in Wanaka, a place he briefly called home.

Considered one of the best climbers in the world, Blanchard (53), of Alberta, Canada, will deliver a lecture on his climbing career at an evening hosted by the New Zealand Alpine Club (NZAC) and Wanaka guiding company Adventure Consultants.

He spoke at the Otago Museum in Dunedin last night.

Over the past 30 years, Blanchard has specialised in technical winter ascents in the Canadian Rockies and in the world's highest ranges.

Blanchard has spent many months in New Zealand on previous visits, firstly as a climbing adviser based in Queenstown and Mt Cook for the movie Vertical Limits in 1999.

He then returned as a guide in 2004 and, most recently, spent time guiding for Adventure Consultants during 2008 when he was based in Wanaka.
