Colourful costumes and floats in the name of sustainability brightened the streets of Queenstown at midday in the second day of the annual winter festival.

About 5000 people turned out for the Golden Mile race and the parade, hosted by Brendan Quill and Queenstown Lakes District Councillor Craig Ferguson.

In the Golden Mile race runners of all styles were out in force, wearing everything from fluorescent colours and wigs to onsies and suits in the battle to sprint to the finish line.

Queenstown residents Becky and Alan Paris, and their son Tucker were team Sustained Happiness, wearing recycled florescent pink costumes worn in other races.

The parade was just as bright with 35 floats circling around Queenstown streets, all led by Sergeant Kate Pirovano on horseback.

Crowds watched as many creative floats made the rounds, many filled with children in costume, including honey bees and recycling robots, and paper-mache creations.

Winners of the parade and race will be announced at a prize-giving on Monday morning.
