While Readings Cinemas could not confirm how many people attended Monday's Queenstown premiere of locally-filmed manhunt western Tracker, management said it had been "the biggest movie of the day".
The film features English actor Ray Winstone as master tracker and Boer War survivor Arjan who, upon arriving in colonial New Zealand, is promised a bounty to capture Kereama (Temuera Morrison), a Maori seafarer accused of killing a soldier.
The film, shot over various locations in the Wakatipu district in November 2009, follows Arjan in deadly pursuit of Kereama through various Central Otago locations, including Moke Lake, the Rees Valley, Nevis Valley, Kawarau River, Queenstown Hill and Glenorchy.
Cinema complex manager Rebekah Moore said there had been a good response to the movie and it would screen again next week.
"We are definitely keen to get locals in and seeing the most of this film and the spectacular scenery that we love," she said.
"I just spoke to a couple who had seen it yesterday, and they loved it. There's been very positive feedback."
The film was released in the United Kingdom on April 29 and released in New Zealand on May 5.
• Tracker will show at Reading Cinemas in the Queenstown Mall at 12.45pm and 6.15pm today, 6.15pm tomorrow and Sunday and 12.45pm and 6.15pm on Monday.
