The Royal New Zealand Air Force 14 Squadron conducted one of its first navigation training sorties in the Glenorchy area yesterday morning.
NZDF external relations and media manager Geoff Davies said the sortie involved high and low level navigation techniques and it tested the new ''mission planning system'' for the aircraft.
The 11 Texan II aircraft - purpose built for military training - replaced the CT 4/E Airtrainer as the defence force's pilot training aircraft.
Mr Davies said it was likely the 586kmh Texan plane would be seen from ''time to time'' in the South Island due to its greater range and performance and the conditions around Central Otago.
