The closure of the historic Skippers Rd this week will not affect a tourism company which operates in Skippers Canyon.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council was forced to close the 22km road to the public from Monday because of urgent repairs needed to an undermined section of the road about 1km from the turn-off on the Coronet Peak access road.

But Skippers Canyon Jet and 4WD Adventures said yesterday it had a special access arrangement with the council.

Marketing manager Matt Rhodes said the company was "100% dependent on the road", being the only business allowed to operate a jet-boat on the Shotover River in Skippers Canyon and 4WD tours along the narrow and often spectacular Skippers Rd.

The council said the repair work on the road could take six weeks.
