Visitor numbers to Queenstown in August were on a par with the same month last year, according to research released recently by Statistics New Zealand.

Meanwhile, Queenstown Airport found overall passenger numbers increased 19.1% in September compared with September last year.

The latest commercial accommodation monitor by Statistics NZ showed the resort's August 2012 figures were similar to August 2011, overall guest nights increasing 0.2% to 246,359.

International guest nights were almost unchanged at 165,640 and domestic guest nights increased 0.6% to 80,719.

Holiday parks showed the most improvement compared with August 2011, visitor nights increasing 13.1%.

Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd said the result was reasonably pleasing compared with the national picture, which showed a 9.2% drop in guest nights for the month.

Queenstown Airport reported its domestic passenger numbers in September were up 27.1% compared with September last year, but international numbers were down 5%. However, international numbers were still up 12.9% for the year to date.

The trend of increased domestic numbers was expected to continue, and Air New Zealand was increasing its domestic schedule this summer.

International passenger numbers were expected to continue to increase, Jetstar announcing extra services between Queenstown and Melbourne and Queenstown and Sydney from mid-November.
