The International Air Transport Association’s three-letter abbreviation for Queenstown’s been turned into this giant sign at Queenstown Airport, which is likely to be fully installed, including lighting and planting, by the end of next week.
Manufactured and delivered by National Signs, the letters — measuring 2.8m, including the base — have been made from steel wrapped in aluminium, giving the effect of corten steel.
Airport aviation and customer chief Todd Grace says the sign forms part of their broader wayfinding project, and gives visitors and locals a "memorable point of arrival and departure".
"We hope the sign becomes a much-loved feature that encourages people to stop, connect and share their Southern Lakes journey and, for those of us who are local, [provide] a connection to home."
The cost of the new sign’s about $75,000.
