Alleged speedster’s name suppressed

A man charged with operating a 2019 Lamborghini Huracan with an unnecessary exhibition of speed in Queenstown will keep his name secret, for now at least.

Police impounded the vehicle — which, according to Trade Me, has a median listing price over the past year of $380,322 — for 28 days after the 26-year-old driver was stopped by police in Shotover St on February 5.

Appearing in Queenstown District Court before community magistrate Elder Robati late last month, the man’s lawyer, Lewis Webb, successfully argued for interim name suppression, primarily due to potential employment impacts.

While the matter had attracted "significant media attention", he argued there was "little public interest" in the case.

"Essentially, it’s just a man with a Lamborghini which is attracting some attention in the Queenstown area."

The driver was remanded without plea to reappear in April.
