Queenstown's Fryer Street is rapidly becoming an apartment-lover’s haven.

Yet another apartment development has been proposed for the central resort street.

Laird Properties Ltd has applied for consent to build 41 residential units, which could also be used for visitor accommodation, over three storeys at 20 and 26 Fryer Street.

The application states the development will "provide for the social and economic wellbeing of the community through a positive contribution to the social cohesion by providing apartment sizes that are well suited to couples, workers or small families in close proximity to town".

"This is provision of a choice that has not historically been well supplied in close proximity to Queenstown, where for many it is most efficient to live."

It follows an application lodged in February from Trojan Holdings Ltd, owned by Sir John Davies, to build 19 units across three two-storey buildings at 37 and 41 Fryer St, which back on to Warren Park.

The units will be a mixture of studio units and two-bedroom apartments, to be used to house staff.

"This is considered to be a positive benefit of the proposed development given the housing supply and affordability issues facing the district at this time," the application stated.

It called Fryer St "an area in transition". At the time, resource consent was also being sought by Morning Star Properties Ltd for four residential units at 40 Fryer St.

A major housing development is also planned for the nearby former Wakatipu High School site. Demolition work began last week.

Big savings for renters in commute time and cost of travel.
Also big savings for Queenstown council in reducing congestion and developing and servicing distant suburbs
