A function last Thursday to mark the 25th anniversary of the Lakes District Arts Trust — which has overseen the installation of 14 public artworks throughout Queenstown Lakes — also saw its leadership change hands.

Following the trust’s AGM earlier in the day, art consultant Deborah McCormick was announced as its new chair, taking over from longtime Queenstown artist Jeri Elliot, who was also an original trustee.

Mayor Glyn Lewers, in his last speech before losing office at last weekend’s election, acknowledged Elliot’s contribution.

"She has generously given her time, expertise and leadership, often returning to the role of chair to ensure the trust remains a strong voice in the public arts space."

He also noted the trust had been established under former mayor Warren Cooper, "who recognised the need for a dedicated group to oversee the installation of public artworks on behalf of the council, and you’ve got to admit, what a legacy he’s actually left behind for us all".

Lewers also said the trust’s artworks "have significantly enhanced our public spaces, bringing life, beauty and meaning to places we all share".
