Treble Cone's long-serving head coach, Guenther Birgmann, has taken over the Treble Cone Race Academy for the 2011 season.

The academy attracts more than 90 international ski racers to Wanaka every year.

The move guarantees the future of the academy and ensures the programme will continue to be based at Treble Cone, the ski resort and Mr Birgmann announced yesterday in a joint statement.

The academy runs programmes from July through to the end of September, incorporating physical, nutritional, theory and on-mountain training.

During the southern hemisphere off-season Mr Birgmann is head coach of Lake Tahoe's Sugar Bowl Academy in California, in the United States.

The junior ski race programme, previously run by the race academy, will now be managed by the Treble Cone snowsports school, under Klaus Mair.

Treble Cone will be open between June 23 and October 2.
