Coronet ski area opens for the 2017 season this morning.

Ski area manager Nigel Kerr said snow earlier this week and freezing temperatures in the Wakatipu had created an early-season base between 15cm and 40cm across the mountain.

The Magic Carpet lifts, Meadows Express and Coronet Express chair lift will all open at 9am today, while the tubing park will open at 10am.

T-shirts would be handed out to the first four people on the chairlift.

Mr Kerr said there was a ''positive vibe all around'' on the mountain.

''Coronet Peak has a loyal following and we know people have been hanging out to get up here.

''For many people [today's] opening will give them that much-longed for run, so we expect a lot of happy familiar faces having a good time.''

It is the third skifield in the Southern Lakes to open - Cardrona and the Remarkables opened for the season last Saturday, just behind Mt Hutt, which opened last Friday.

Treble Cone is expected to open on June 22.
