The New Zealand Transport Agency will install full-time traffic counting equipment on the busy one-lane Albert Town bridge, with a long term view  to upgrading or replacing the bridge.

Traffic can quickly back up on the 1930s one-way bridge which crosses the Clutha River on State Highway 6. Installing the equipment would allow more accurate information about traffic using the bridge to be collected.

Information gathered will be used to measure the expected growth of traffic in the area, particularly on the Lake Hawea side of the bridge. Southern Business Unit manager Ian Duncan said while there were no immediate plans to upgrade or replace the bridge, it was a long-term objective.

Like all projects, it would need to be prioritised alongside other projects across New Zealand.

Before any major upgrades were started,

traffic signals would probably be installed, similar to what happened with the Kawarau Falls bridge in Queenstown,  he  said.
