Driver seriously hurt after car falls in Kawarau

A man has been airlifted to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after a car fell in the Kawarau River on the Gibbston Highway near Queenstown this morning.

St John spokeswoman Chrissy Hamilton said at 9.15am a car fell down a steep bank, landing halfway in the Kawarau River, near the intersection of Gibbston Highway (State Highway 6) and Victoria Flats Rd.

The driver managed to get himself out of the car.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said crews from Arrowtown and Cromwell used ropes to rescue the man from beside the river.
