Thousands of festival-goers are expected to make their way to the Cardrona Valley in the next two days for the Rhythm and Alps music festival.

More than 1000 three-day camping ticket holders were allowed on to the festival site yesterday. A small number of "low-key acts" played at the campsite last night and the three main stages will open this afternoon.

Camper Josh Gatonyi,  of Christchurch,  had his tent pitched and  feet up when he spoke to the Otago Daily Times.

Claiming a camping spot close enough to everything but not too close to the toilets had been his prime objective.

"Yeah, we got set up nice and early and got a pretty sweet spot, so it should be good."

About 7000 people were expected to attended the festival.

A limited number of tickets was still available.

Festival organiser Alex Turnbull said everything was on track for a great three days.

"Everybody’s happy; it’s warm, we haven’t had any real issues at all, so it’s a great start to what should be an epic weekend."

About 4000 people were excepted to be on site by the end of today,  and the number to grow to about 7000 on New Year’s Eve.
