Festival not happy with funding

Close to $500,000 has been granted to boost event coffers by the Queenstown District Council.

But not everybody is happy, with Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd saying he was disappointed Winter Festival missed out.

Decisions on event funding grants were made in a public excluded section of last week's full council meeting.

Yesterday the council revealed 19 of the 21 applicants were successful.

New events given funding for the 2019-20 financial year include a national secondary schools aerobics and hip-hop championship, and cultural celebration Polyfest.

The big winners were Luma, Winter Games, the New Zealand Golf Open, and Warbirds Over Wanaka, which received $80,000 each.

Another six events received funding up to $30,000, while nine events received grants of up to $5000 through the council's local community support category to fund the costs of council resources.

One of those events was Winter Festival, and Mr Budd was not impressed it missed out on more significant funding.

Last year, Winter Festival received $50,000 from the council.

"We are disappointed that Winter Festival did not receive funding from the QLDC events fund's latest round, especially after delivering an outstanding community event this year.

"Planning for the 2020 event is under way and we look forward to delivering an exciting Queenstown Winter Festival for our community in 2020."

On the other hand, Luma Light Festival Trust chairman Duncan Forsyth said the funding was "fantastic" and showed Luma was now an important event on the Queenstown calendar.

That was "very humbling and flattering", he said.
