It’s won the major $1000 grant in Mitre 10 Mega Queenstown’s latest grants round for local Enviroschools’ gardening and sustainability initiatives.
The garden will be located beside the science department and the department for students with high needs for learning support.
During class time the garden will be used by both departments for different purposes, and during lunch breaks it’ll be another outdoor eating space for students and teachers.
As befitting a sensory garden, the five senses — touch, sound, sight, taste and smell — will be embraced.
In autumn, for example, students will be able to hear the rattle of seed pods.
Plants will also be chosen in strips highlighting all the rainbow colours to represent inclusivity, which is one of the school’s values.
There’ll also be a calming seating space in the centre of the garden.
Mitre 10 Mega’s other grants went to Shotover Primary and Remarkables Primary, which each received $500 worth of products for, respectively, a sustainable orchard and enviroclub supplies, comprising tools and fruit trees.
And Glenorchy School and Queenstown Primary received $250 vouchers for, respectively, general garden supplies and supplies for the school’s garden to table programme.
