Flight training hopes

The Wakatipu Aero Club is searching for sponsors to "substantially boost" the club's funds, allowing it to relaunch its scholarship programme.

Club spokesman Ian Webb said the club, in conjunction with the Wakatipu Youth Flying Trust, was hoping to relaunch the programme to enable a young person from the district to undertake free flight training.

The scholarship requires the trust to raise $22,500 - as of January 12, it had raised just over $870.

• The aero club is holding an open day on Sunday from 9am.

"Anyone ... is welcome to call in, take a look at the aeroplanes, talk to an instructor, go for a trial flight," Mr Webb said.

• Scholarship criteria can be viewed and donations made at www.wakatipuyouthflyingtrust.org. The trust is a registered charity and donations are tax deductible.
