Jacks Point has been revealed to be the top sex toy-buying place in Otago, per capita, over the past year.
However, the chairman of the local residents’ association is pointing the finger at a neighbouring housing development for skewing the data.
End-of-year sales figures released by Australasian adult toy retailer Adulttoymegastore (ATMS) showed one in every 40 Jacks Point residents had bought a sex toy over the past year.
Arrowtown was the "second-most sex toy-buying town in Otago", followed by Wānaka.
Newly-elected Queenstown Mayor John Glover said "there must be some interesting parties happening down in Jacks Point".
He expected residents not to be bothered by the finding.
"I think it’s a reflection that we’re a population that’s diverse and probably representative of any community population you’d get anywhere else in the country."
It was interesting that such market analysis existed, he said.
"I guess somebody has to be the biggest purchaser."
The population of Jacks Point was estimated at 5500 by Statistics NZ in late June.
Jacks Point Residents and Owners Association chairman Mike Coburn said he had "no idea in respect to that matter".
"But what I can say is that when they talk about Jacks Point, they also take into account Hanleys Farm, which is quite a bit bigger because that’s considered to be in the Jacks Point zone."
He believed the 561-hectare Hanleys Farm housing development could have skewed the data.
There were probably twice as many people in Hanleys Farm as there were at Jacks Point, and the two demographics were "quite different", Mr Coburn said.
"I would say the residents of Jacks Point, in other words, the original Jacks Point, would be very surprised.
"I would say quite a few of them would raise their eyebrows."
ATMS, which says it is New Zealand’s largest online adult toy retailer, also revealed Otago had bought "the most sex swings in the country".
Of all the sex swings bought in New Zealand over the past year, 42% of them were bought in Otago.
It did not provide the actual number of swings involved.
The region also topped the charts for sales of poles and neon lights.
