A Wellington-based police media adviser said emergency services were alerted at 10.25am to the accident, which occurred about 12km from Queenstown near the intersection with Fishermans Lane.
Two men in the car were uninjured.
The car was travelling towards the resort at the time of the accident. No other vehicle was involved.
It was too early to say what caused the crash, she said.
