Queenstown Commercial, a company linked to Queenstown Country Club developer Sanderson Group, is building 12 two-storey homes, in a mixture of stand-alone and duplexes, which are expected to be completed in stages between June and September.
Queenstown Commercial development manager Brent Mitchell says they’ll be offered for rent on a room-by-room basis to the 30-odd staff expected to be employed at the nearby independent hospital.
They’ll also be available for workers at a hospital and care facility planned for the Arvida Queenstown Country Club retirement village, sold by Sanderson Group last August.
Construction of the $20 million Southern Cross hospital, next to the retirement village, is expected to start this month.
Mitchell says when Sanderson Group began developing the retirement village, it realised the resort’s accommodation and transport difficulties would pose challenges for the village’s future workers, and those challenges will remain for workers at both new hospitals.
The homes will provide “accommodation opportunities” within walking distance of the new facilities.
They’lll be particularly attractive for workers with families or those without cars, he says.
When the hospital’s completed, likely late next year, Sanderson Group will lease it to joint venture partners Southern Cross Hospitals and Central Lakes Trust.
