Patchwork repairs ‘waste of money’

A longtime resident in Queenstown’s Sunshine Bay believes a council contractor’s wasting tens of thousands of dollars by not properly repairing a slumping road.

Dave Slawson says after a mains line below Fernhill Rd was connected to a pipe servicing a new development, leaks continue to occur where they join up.

"The main problem is every time it leaks it’s creating a slump above it."

He says three times in the past six or so months, the latest just recently, council contractor Veolia’s patched up the road without properly fixing it.

"It’s just tens of thousands of dollars being wasted every time they show up."

Aside from the cost of each visit, including traffic control, yellow cones and large vacuum extraction trucks, Slawson says the never-ending slumping’s caused a traffic hazard.

Motorists wanting to avoid getting jolted by driving over the area try to go to the side of the road, potentially creating safety problems, he notes.

He suggests a 90 square metre area of road needs to be fixed properly for once and for all — "I’m sick of our money being wasted".

"If this isn’t repaired to a higher standard, we already know the pipes will burst again and again."

A council spokesperson, who’s only aware of a June 3 water leak being reported, says "the leak was caused by a burst pipe, and a repair was begun straight away by council contractors".

"The trench was reinstated with gravel.

"Permanent reinstatement is awaiting a time suitable for application of asphalt, noting the current cold winter conditions make asphalting very difficult, but we have asked the contractor to improve the temporary reinstatement.

"Costs for this work are not yet finalised."
