Creative Cows wants to hear from street artists.

This week the Queenstown Lakes District Council approved consent for the Cow Lane Street Art Project, dubbed the Creative Cows, to cover one side of a CBD alley with art.

Queenstown residents Sarah Dagg and Raylene McQueen launched the initiative late last year, aiming to raise funds and commission art for Cow Lane, between Camp and Beach Sts, focusing on one building at a time.

"It’s a scruffy lane and it’s right in the middle of a beautiful town and ...  it has some of the highest visibility in the whole of Queenstown," Mrs Dagg said.

"It’s always going to be a service lane, but it can be a bit creative and fun."

The women received a kick-starter grant from Creative Queenstown and plan a fundraising quiz night in Queenstown next month to pay for the first piece, budgeted between $5000 and $10,000.

It was planned for Betty’s Liquor/Bungalow’s 18m by 7m wall, at the Camp St entrance to the lane.

"It’s a very large platform, that first one, so probably really suited to maybe someone with experience in large murals," Mrs Dagg said.

"If someone wants to be part of it but that wall’s not right for them, they can still send in art and then when we get enough money to pay them for another piece we can always find a space further down [the lane]."

In time, one side of the lane will be covered in art. Each piece would be selected by a judging panel in conjunction with landlords and tenants.

The first piece would be selected at the beginning of June and it was hoped that would be completed later this year.
