Police are appealing for witnesses after two people believed to have been drinking alcohol fled the scene of a car crash this morning.
The car, occupied by a man and woman, went through a stop sign at the turn-off to Arrowtown from State Highway 6 and crashed into a bank on the side of the road at about 5.15am.
Sergeant Steve Watt, of Queenstown, said both occupants left the scene before police arrived and officers suspected the pair had been drinking.
Sgt Watt said the car was a company vehicle that was linked to an Arrowtown address.
Officers also dealt with several other incidents in Queenstown over the weekend.
A man who lost his wallet on Saturday night and later found it with his bank card missing was shocked to discover his card had been used to make eight payments totalling $300.
Police are making enquiries and looking at CCTV footage of the area to try and find the offender.
A 49-year-old Australian man was arrested and charged with assault after he allegedly hit another customer over the head with a bottle at a Frankton bar.
Sgt Watt said the victim was "extremely lucky'' to only be left with minor injuries.
The alleged offender was due to appear in court this week.
Five suspected drink-drivers were stopped by officers over the weekend.
A 36-year-old Christchurch man blew a reading of 745mcg and a 28-year-old Queenstown man recorded a reading of 760mcg when they were stopped on Frankton Rd and breath-tested by officers on Friday night.
A 29-year-old man, of Queenstown, was also stopped on Frankton Rd just after midnight on Saturday. He blew a reading of 716mcg.
A 28-year-old Queenstown woman was stopped on the same road yesterday and recorded a reading of 822mcg.
Officers also stopped a 23-year-old Queenstown man on Lake Esplanade yesterday, who recorded a reading of 696mcg.
All five were due to appear in court this week charged with driving with excess breath alcohol levels.
