Q'town crash: ambulance used instead of chopper

A person "critically" injured in an early morning crash in Queenstown is being taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital as bad weather made it too risky to use a helicopter.

The person was initially taken to Lakes District Hospital, along with seven others, after a van crashed on Gorge Rd today.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 6am.

A St John spokesman said due to the weather, the patient was being transferred ambulance, rather than helicopter, to Dunedin.

An ambulance from Dunedin would meet the Queenstown ambulance in the middle to pick up the patient, he said.
