The 9.3 team, coached by Joe Davis, played two games each Sunday over about 12 weeks against teams from Cromwell, Alexandra and Wanaka, as well as three other U9 Queenstown teams.
"The boys went from strength to strength, all the other coaches were singing their praises and giving them pats on the back," Davis says.
The team had about three draws but also racked up cricket scores in other games.
Davis says he sometimes pulled a player off so their opponents didn’t feel too demoralised.
"And I’d change the rules so our boys had to make five passes before they were allowed to shoot, which made it tougher for them."
Davis hails his players’ commitment, having started training in Term 1.
"They trained every Wednesday, 4 to 5, and then the boys were turning up in Alexandra at 10 on a Sunday morning when it was freezing."
He’s also coached about four of the boys for the past three years, which helped with teamwork.
Davis says his star players were Miller Cook, who was banging in goals from halfway, Freddie Paterson and his own son, Harry.
"Fletcher Smith was our star defender, and he scored some good goals as well.
"But I’d say almost every kid scored at least once — it was a good team effort, really."
