A record crowd attended the 79th annual Wanaka A&P Show in fine autumn weather on Friday and Saturday.

Show co-ordinator Jane Stalker said the attendance - 40,000 people - was 5000 more than last year.

"The show grows in number every year but the 14% increase in attendance over the two-day event has exceeded expectations,'' she said.

"We're blown away by the numbers this year.''Ms Stalker said the show had even run out of tickets and had to use its back-up supply.

"It's been a fantastic couple of days and we've had a lot of positive comments from our visitors, with some people even coming to Wanaka from the North Island specifically for the show.''

The number of trade exhibitors was a record 472, and there were also a record 300 equestrian entries.

The trial of a park-and-ride bus system carrying people to and from the show to reduce parking congestion in central Wanaka, was successful and would be continued next year, Ms Stalker said.

A fundraising event for show guest of honour Catriona Williams' charity, the CatWalk Spinal Injury Trust, raised $6875.
