A man and a woman were air-lifted to Dunedin Hospital tonight after two cars collided in the Kawarau Gorge about 5.30pm.

The man escaped his Subaru Outback, which was on fire, and the woman was cut free from her Toyota Corolla.

It appeared the woman, aged in her 50s, was driving on State Highway 8 towards Cromwell when she crossed the centre line and hit the Queenstown-bound Subaru, which was driven by a man in his 30s, Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said at the scene.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

An initial assessment indicated a fire broke out in the Subaru's engine.

Passers-by used a small fire extinguisher to put out the flames, he said.

Both people appeared to be conscious when they were stretchered into separate helicopters.
